i. Compulsory
Political and Democratic Education (KS3 Comprehensive)
I
think that the Committee should consider launching an inquiry into
political and democratic education in Welsh Schools. The inquiry
should:
-
Explore current provision in Welsh Schools;
-
Evaluate and scrutinise the effectiveness of the Welsh
Baccalaureate in educating young people on politics and
democracy;
-
Launch two widely-accessible consultation programmes, one for
teaching staff and one for young people;
-
Explore pre-existing mechanisms and curriculums in other countries;
and
-
Compile and forward recommendations for the Welsh
Government.
ii. Welsh Youth
Democratic Organisations (National and Regional)
I
think that the Committee should consider completing a series of
inquiries relating to Welsh Youth Democratic Organisations (such as
Youth Councils). Due to the ‘post-code’ lottery culture
that exists around these organisations in Wales, along with the
absence of an established national infrastructure, there is a lack
of consistency in the quality of these organisations across Wales.
Therefore, I believe the Committee should take evidence from
members of pre-existing organisations (e.g. Youth Councils and
forums) in order to formulate a proposed set of statutory standards
across Wales.
iii. The
Participation and Consultation of Children and Young People (below
the voting age of 18) on Matters Relating to the UK’s Exit
from the EU.
The
result of the referendum and the political aftermath that followed
(i.e. the resignation of the Prime Minister) has cultured much
disillusionment amongst children and young people, with both
politics and their futures.
Therefore, I think
that the Committee should launch an inquiry into:
- How
the Welsh Government is ensuring the voices and concerns of
children and young people are heard in ‘Brexit’
discussions; and
- How
the Welsh Government/Welsh Assembly is planning on educating
children and young people on the changes occurring in their country
and inevitably, in their futures.
